On February 20, 1962, John Glenn made his historic flight in Friendships 7, being the first American to travel in Space

NASA station on Grand Turk

After three trips around the earth , he landed near Grand Turk, Lookouts on the destroyer USS Noa sighted the main parachute at an altitude of 5,000 ft from a range of 5 nautical miles. The USS Noa had the spacecraft aboard 21 minutes after landing and astronaut John Glenn remained in the spacecraft during pickup.

Glenn was transferred by helicopter from the USS Noa to the USS Randolph, and then flown to Grand Turk for his debriefing and medical as planned. The capsule joined him later when it was delivered to Grand Turk by ship.

Growing up on a dairy farm in southeastern Indiana, Gary traveled very little until midlife, when the opportunity became available to him.

Grabbing his camera and a bag full of equipment, he began his vision quest traveling to most areas of the United States and several countries abroad.

Along the way he collected several thousand photographs that he wants to share with everyone.

Gary decided the best way to accomplish his goal was to publish photo documentaries on the various areas of the world he has visited.

What will follow will be several photography books, who knows how many will wind up in his collection.

Grand Turk: Columbus’s First Landing In the New World

As in many islands in the Caribbean, Grand Turk claims to be the site of Christopher Columbus’s first landing in the new world.  Many make this claim just before they begin to tell you how horrible a man he was.

What they often forget to tell you is the natives weren’t alter boys themselves, many were cannibalistic, into self sacrifice, murder rape and were in constant wars.

In those days, everyone was cruel to everyone, regardless of race, creed or national origin.

One of the many cannons still on the island designed to protect the islanders from attack.

Near the site of the splash down of John Glenn , America’s first astronaut in space, the island has remained quiet and reserved until now. That is about to change, many new resort paradises are on the horizon and the island is destined to become a destination resort.

Margaritaville, the first of the new restaurants, is located near the cruise dock, is sure to be the first of many to grace this island. Let’s hope it doesn’t change the character and uniqueness of the island.

Grand Turk Caicos Islands

DSC_0113_edited-1

Cockburn Town , Grand Turk

Only 6 miles long and a little over a mile wide, Grand Turk is blessed with miles of quiet sugary beaches, and is close to many uninhabited islands that just can’t wait to be explored! On the north point of the island , a channel gives access to North Creek, the only hurricane shelter for yachts between Nassau and Puerto Rico.

Since it’s founding by Bermudian Salt Rakers in 1766, Grand Turk has been the administrative and political capitol of the Turks and Caicos Islands. It’s turn of the century Caribbean charm is evident everywhere, the Bermudian British architecture makes any visit worthwhile!

Reserve your next vacation with Hilton Grand Vacations. Great vacation packages available.

It’s old Bermudian-style architecture, gates and
doorways, beautiful turquoise waters and colorful plants  set Grand
Turk apart from the other islands with its endearing Caribbean charm and make it a photographers paradise

During the early days, salt was the main source of income. Channels were dug from the ocean and water was drained into large flat areas where the water evaporated, thus the salt could be harvested and used not only on their iguana steaks, but exported as well.

Donkeys, horses and cattle were the means of transportation during the salt industry, largely now unemployed, these animals are seen still wondering the streets and countryside of Grand Turk.

On Feb. 20 1962 astronaut John Glenn, became the first American to orbit the earth and his space capsule splashed down in Grand Turk waters and was brought to the island for a medical checkup and post flight de-briefing.

A first hand account of this historical event, which would be of interest to historians, stamp collectors, and those interested in Caicos Islands and Grand Turk history is featured in the local museum and includes postage stamps and a special envelope autographed by John Glenn.

baby boomers

Each generation from the beginning of our country has contributed to what our country has become. By the same token, no one is perfect. Consequently, each generation has done and will continue to perform acts that it would have been better if some other course of action was taken.
The baby boomers have contributed much and have been blamed for the decline of America. What is the true story?
