Phillippi Creek Estates Park, Sarasota Florida

The Edson Keith estate on the south bank of Phillippi Creek, typical of the grand estate houses erected by the extensive Chicago coterie of friends in Sarasota, reflects much of Sarasota’s most venerable history. The estate lies near the “rancho”, or seasonal fishing camp, on the creek named for Felipe Bermudez.

Part of public lands ceded to the state by the federal government upon admission to the Union, the Philippi parcel was a tiny portion of the 4,000,000 acres purchased by Hamilton Disston of Philadelphia in 1881 for $1,000,000. This purchase helped rescue Florida from bankruptcy after the Civil War.

In 1883, farmer and bee-keeper W.J. Drumwright purchased 40 acres of the parcel from Disston for $50, selling that and additional land in 1910 to George H. and C. Woodburn Matheny, who subdivided it as “Phillippi Park.” In 1911, Chicago socialite Mabel Linn purchased the estate property from the Mathenys and began development of a homesite.

Miss Linn sold the undeveloped property in 1915 for $7,000 to Edson Keith, Jr., president of a large millinery business and a member of Sarasota’s “Chicago Colony” which included the Field, Palmer, and other prominent families. In the summer of 1916, the Keiths began construction of their “Italian Renaissance” home on Phillippi Creek. The architects were William A. Otis and Edwin H. Clark of Chicago. Original out-buildings still standing include a two-story servants’ home, garden shed, and garage. Other buildings on the estate included a water tower, a chauffeur’s house, and various sheds for farm and citrus grove activities.

Keith died in the home in 1939 and his widow sold the property to Chicago doll clothing designer Mae Hansen Prodie, whose husband operated the home as a luxury inn in the 1950s. Mrs. Prodie retired to the home in the 1960s and upon her death in 1986, Sarasota County acquired the property as a park site through a bond referendum.

Phillippi Estate Park located on the shores of Phillippi Creek, is a scenic, 60-acre natural area park south of downtown Sarasota and east of Siesta Key.

A beautiful Garden adorns the area.

Cupolas, popular in a time gone by, adorn the grounds.

Growing up on a dairy farm in southeastern Indiana, Gary traveled very little until midlife, when the opportunity became available to him.

Grabbing his camera and a bag full of equipment, he began his vision quest traveling to most areas of the United States and several countries abroad.

Along the way he collected several thousand photographs that he wants to share with everyone.

Gary decided the best way to accomplish his goal was to publish photo documentaries on the various areas of the world he has visited.

What will follow will be several photography books, who knows how many will wind up in his collection.

Siesta Key; Sarasota Florida

Written and photographed by Gary Wonning

Siesta Key Beach located on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico in Sarasota Florida is often referred to as the best beach in the United States.

With its crystal quartz white sand and two miles of pristine coastline, it isn’t hard to see why it has earned that distinction. Add to that the fact that Florida receives over three hundred days of sunshine yearly, and the temperature rarely dips below sixty and you have a formula for paradise.

Siesta Key Beach

The beach seems to go along forever with puffy white clouds floating aimlessly above.

Sea oats and other  sea life is frequently seen on the beach and shallow waters of the gulf.

An abandoned pier highlights the northern boundary of the beach, leaving one to wonder what came here before.

Siesta Key, Sarasota Florida

Long known for its white crystal sandy beach, Siesta Key remains one of the premier vacation spots in the country.

There is something magical about Siesta Key, its white sand is formed from quartz crystal and some say, including many American Indian tribes in the area, that its mystical powers have long kept hurricanes from striking Sarasota County.
The American Indians always came here in the summer as they knew they would be safe from the storms. A hurricane has never struck Sarasota County.

Tampa, located on the west coast of Florida is about half way between the northern boundaries of Florida and the southern coast. With a population of about 350,000, Tampa is part of the larger Tampa Bay Area which stretches from the New Port Richey area to Venice and Englewood,  has a population of about 4 million people.

Tampa small

Tampa Waterfront

The area was once inhabited by the Safety Harbor Indians and later the Seminoles. After being briefly explored by the Spanish in the early 16th century, there were no European settlements until 1819 when Florida was acquired from Spain.

The town grew slowly until the arrival of the cigar industry, the railroad, and the discovery of phosphate in the late 19th century.

Tampa night

Today the area offers everything a larger city might provide, every major professional sport is represented in the area, although the closest professional basketball team is  in Orlando. Theater, amusement parks, fine restaurants abound, not to mention the many world class beaches, all make the Tampa Bay area a desired location for not only visiting but living as well.

Venice Florida

Venice, a city of approximately 21,000, is located in Sarasota County Florida. The city’s early as well as present claim to fame lies in it’s airport located on the south side of town.

Built in the early 1940’s by the United States Army Air Force it served as a military training facility base, being used as well by( ATC), Air Transport Command to deliver US built aircraft to Britain. As soon as the war was over the US government gave the airport to the city of Venice.

The airport has 2, 5000 runways and is  the base of FFTC (Florida Flight Training Center), that does pilot training as well as charter service within Florida and the surrounding states.

Triple Diamond is the main FBO and provides assistance to jet aircraft.

On September 12, 2001, national news and the FBI descended on Venice  as it was discovered that three of the WTC 9/11 terrorists, Mohamed Atta,Marwan Al-Shehhi, and Ziad Jarrah, had all lived in Venice for the purpose of taking flight training lessons at the Venice Municipal Airport. The trio had all enrolled in Huffman Aviation.

Atta’s time in Venice has been chronicled by Daniel Hopsicker in his book,” Welcome to Terrorland.”

Due to the beauty of the area, warm weather, and white sandy beaches ,many of the men and women who. were stationed in Venice during the war came back to make it their permanent home

Having been listed in many circles as the shark’s tooth capital of the world , Venice holds an annual shark’s tooth festival to commemorate the abundance of shark’s teeth(some of which are known to be thousands of years old) that can be found in the area. Teeth can be found by walking the beach and sifting through the sand, although the best results are had by diving off shore. One can only hope to find the teeth without the shark attached. Just kidding, shark attacks are extremely rare,  no shark attacks have been reported in Sarasota County in many many years.

Probably the best area to find shark’s teeth is south of town behind the airport at a beach known as Caspersen’s Beach, although Sharkey’s Beach is also popular, where shovels and scoops can be rented to find teeth anywhere from 1/4 in. to 3 inches and larger.

In the past, due to the near perfect weather and beautiful scenery,Venice has been the winter home for many organizations, including the Kentucky Military Institute as well as the Ringling Circus .

Be it for a short stay or a lifetime home, Venice calls .
