Barbados: Christ Church, Chase Vault

When traveling one never knows for sure what surprises await them. This is  one of the benefits of travel and is one of the reasons travel is so alluring to so many people.
Chase Vault, Christ Church Barbados

On a recent cruise ship visit to Barbados we were disappointed when the photo tour we wanted to partake in was sold out, so we opted for another tour instead. As it turned out , I was glad we made the change.

One of the stops was at Christ Church located in Christ Church Parish. I  had never been here before and as is my usual custom I hadn’t done much research before coming here. I had no idea what this was about, I normally don’t do much research, I have found my adventures normally turn out best if I just follow my nose and let the universe guide me to where I need to be.

Christ Church is a beautiful old church with a history that spans many centuries. Having survived hurricanes, fires and other disasters , it continues today to serve it’s parishioners as it has in the past. One of the most interesting features of the church is the cemetery and the Chase Vault.

The Chase Vault was originally built as a final resting place for some of the early more prominent citizens of the congregation. It was soon discovered that after burial the coffins would move about the vault and be in total disarray upon examination. The vault was sealed with heavy stones, but noises would be heard coming from inside and the contents of the vault would be moved from their original location.

After this phenomenon was observed several times, the parishioners decided to bury the coffins in the cemetery,  and as a result the disturbances ceased.

Several years ago, a visitor decided to take a souvenir home with them. Upon arriving home , they began to experience all sorts of misfortune, and experienced one personal disaster after another. They returned the souvenir to the crypt and their fortune immediately changed.

I decided to take only photos and leave only footprints.

St. Stanislaus Church Casa De Campo

Written by; Gary Wonning

St. Stanislaus Catholic Church is no doubt the signature landmark in this quaint little town of Altos de Chavon.

Situated on the tall banks over looking the Chavon River in Santa Dominica, this quaint little village of Altos de Chavon was designed as a replica of a 16th century  Mediterranean village and is one of the most fascinating landmarks in the Caribbean.

Designed by Dominican architect Jose Antionio Caro and created by Italian designer Roberto Coppa, the stone pathways ,ironwork furniture and buildings were all designed by Dominican artisans. The stone work and iron work was all hand crafted and created individually.
St. Stanislaus Church

It was built as a center of culture for the Dominican people, who along with tourists and working artists flock to this magical center for inspiration and enlightenment.

Take a few minutes and stroll along cobblestone streets and enjoy the architectural grandeur
of days gone by as you take in the detailed, amazing quality
craftsmanship of yesteryear. Quaint shops, boutiques, art galleries,
fine restaurants and an archaeological museum are just a sampling of the
world that awaits atop the picturesque cliffs of Casa de Campo.

St. Thomas:Valdemar Hill Overlook

Art Prints

While visiting the beautiful paradise island of St. Thomas, a “must see” vantage point is Valdemar Hill Scenic Overlook. This site was established in the year 2000 and provides a beautiful panoramic view of The St. Thomas Harbor, the capitol city of Charlotte-Amalie and the surrounding mountains.

The historic spot also is home to Drake’s Seat, the exact location where Sir Francis Drake would observe the comings and goings of his fleet, while maintaining a watchful eye for unwelcome visitors.

It is a convenient resting spot on the way to Megan’s Bay, a favorite beach resort, located nearby.

Don’t forget your camera, as today the only ships entering the harbor are cruise ships coming and going to other exotic ports in the Caribbean.

St. Lucia: Morne Coubaril Plantation

Situated on the beautiful island of St. Lucia, Morne Coubaril Plantation is one of the premier sites a visitor to this tiny island should not miss. Conveniently located on the highway leading to the Pitons,  the plantation makes a perfect lunch stop.

This is a working cocoa and coconut plantation which gives visitors
the opportunity to see first hand the processing of copra, cocoa and
manioc. The estate still has its traditional buildings and the ruins of a
water and sugar mill.

Morne Coubaril Plantation

Even the rains common in this area of the world can not spoil the time spent here, much of the tour is either inside or under the cover of trees, thus providing much needed protection from the elements.

Bring your camera and plan on spending a couple of hours, whereby one hour can be spent touring the grounds and the remaining hour can be reserved for a refreshing outdoor lunch.

Antigua: Island of Contrasts

Art Prints

Written by: Gary Wonning

Antigua, located in the Leeward Islands of the West Indies is an island of many different contrasts. Here you will find extreme wealth as well as extreme poverty.

Nelson’s Dock Yard appropriately named after Horaito Nelson, has become a premier sailing and boating destination. Not only famous for boating, Nelson’s Dockyard provides much opportunity to shop and dine and as is the case with most Caribbean Islands, there is plenty of quality rum to go around.

Today English Harbour and the neighboring village of Falmouth are internationally famous as a yachting and sailing destination and provisioning center. During Antigua Sailing Week,
at the end of April and beginning of May, the annual world-class
regatta brings many sailing vessels and sailors to the island to play
sports.

Venturing into the countryside , one can find a variety of lifestyles and scenery to whet your appetite for variety. Many interesting people are more than willing to  offer a photo op for a small token of appreciation.

Keep your camera and credit card handy, both will be used often!

Grand Turk : Masonic Lodge

Grand Turk, the largest of the Turk Islands host the capitol of the Turks Cockburn Town.First discovered by Columbus in 1492, Grand Turk is certainly one of the most remote islands in the Caribbean.

Cockburn Town Grand Turk Masonic Lodge

Being located as such, it demonstrates the far reaches of Masonry. Located on this tiny island with a beautiful view of the Caribbean Ocean , within walking distance of the plaque bearing the information that signifies the discovery of the island by Christopher Columbus in 1492, it is easy to comprehend the influence that Masonry has had in the world not only today but in the distant past.

It is rumored that Columbus himself was the last Knight’s Templar, the crusaders that protected the route the Christians took to visit the Holy Land during the middle ages.

St. Lucia:Pondering Life

St. Lucia: Where life is simple and carefree.

While traveling about the county side , a constant eye has to be kept for any photo opportunity that may arise. Visiting St. Lucia on a recent cruise, I was rather disappointed. The weather wasn’t agreeing with having an excellent photo gathering expedition.

It had been cloudy and raining all morning, so much that several members of or group decided to forego any land tours and decided to stay on the ship. No to be discouraged easily, I decided to brave the elements and see what I could see.

As time went by, I was glad I did, remembering to focus on local close scenes rather than vast landscape shots, I decided to find some of the local citizens and buildings to photograph. Going with the flow turned out quit well, several excellent photos were taken.

It is often said that a serious photographer can’t take high quality photos while on a cruise. I beg to differ, being a serious photographer means you can find good photo ops no matter where or how you may travel. It just takes a little ingenuity and allowing oneself to think out of the box. Good photos are everywhere, all it takes to find them is to adapt to the environment and situation. You may not get the preconceived photos you were planning on , however , the ones you do take will be more original than the run of the mill touristy shots that millions of people have taken before you.

Just like this man in the photo, let life pass you by, and take only the opportunities to your liking that are presented to you.
