You count the sprinkles on each kid’s cupcake to make sure they’re equal.

You have the time to shave only one leg at a time.Your kid throws up and you catch it.

Some one else’s kid throws up at a party. You keep eating.

You consider finger paints to be a controlled substance.

You’ve mastered the art of placing large quantities of pancakes and eggs on a plate without anything touching.

Your child insists that you read “Once Upon a Potty” out loud in the lobby of Grand Central Station and you do it.

You cling to the high moral ground on toy weapons, your child chews his toast into the shape of a gun.

You hope ketchup is a vegetable, since it’s the only way your child eats.

You can’t bear the thought of your son’s first girlfriend.

You hate the thought of his wife even more.

You find yourself cutting your husbands’ (spouse’s) sandwiches into cute shapes.

You can’t bear to give away baby clothes – it’s so final.

You hear your mother’s voice coming out of your mouth when you say, “NOT in your good clothes!”

You stop criticizing the way your mother raised you.

You donate to charities in the hope that your child won’t get that disease.

You hire a sitter because you haven’t been out with your husband in ages, then spend half the night checking on the kids.

You use your own saliva to clean your child’s face.

You say at least once a day, “I’m not cut out for this job”, but you know you wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Casey Key: Nokomis Florida

The narrow island of Casey Key is one of Sarasota’s hidden gems, an isolated and exclusive enclave just off the sleepy mainland town of Nokomis.

It’s easy to pass by this hidden gem, relativity unknown to the general public, this gem is truly a paradise on earth.

 

With white crystal sands and quiet beaches it is truly the playground of the rich and famous. Seldom does one see more than just a few beach goers on this tiny island.

The only public beach is on the south end, the rest can be classified as public, but, there are no parking places, making them almost inaccessible to everyone but residents.

Siesta Key; Sarasota Florida

Siesta Key Beach located on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico in Sarasota Florida is often referred to as the best beach in the United States.

With its crystal quartz white sand and two miles of pristine coastline, it isn’t hard to see why it has earned that distinction. Add to that the fact that Florida receives over three hundred days of sunshine yearly, and the temperature rarely dips below sixty and you have a formula for paradise.

The beach seems to go along forever with puffy white clouds floating aimlessly above.

Sea oats and other  sea life is frequently seen on the beach and shallow waters of the gulf.

Autumn in Indiana

The most beautiful time of the year to spend in the midwest, in particular, Indiana is in the autumn. The summer heat and rains have passed, the first frost has come and gone, the leaves have turned a golden color and winter has not yet set in.

 

Autumn is  a time of apple cider and pumpkins. Fall festivals are plentiful where one can enjoy the crisp, clear days with beautiful blue cloudless skies and a harvest moon.

 

Hayrides and gathering pumpkins are a favorite pastime. The pumpkins make excellent pie and jack-0-lanterns for Halloween. 

 

The fall foliage is at it’s best in mid-October, providing a variety of colors that are pleasing to the eye. It’s time to enjoy that last wiener roast around a  camp fire complete with  smores and hot chocolate.

 

 The author has been a writer/ photographer for over 20 years, specializing in nature, landscapes and studying native cultures. Besides visiting most of the United States, he has traveled to such places as Egypt, the Canary Islands, much of the Caribbean. Port Huron Michigan

In 1814, Fort Gratiot was established at the base of Lake Huron and was considered to be the first Euro-American population in the area. There was an Ojibwa reservation in part of the modern area of Port Huron until 1836. In later years Fort Gratiot was incorporated into Port Huron.

 

Port Huron was the boyhood home of Thomas Edison who moved here in 1854.

 

 

12 year old Thomas Edison rode the train daily to Detroit and back selling newspapers. He earned enough in a very short time to supplement his income and buy chemical and other items for his experiments. 

The Grand Trunk Western Railroad tunnel was opened in 1891 and links Port Huron with Canada. This international ,so called submarine railway tunnel, was the first international tunnel in the world. The tunnel’s total length is 6,025 feet , with 2,290 feet  underwater. The tunnel operations were electrified in 1908 and then converted to diesel fuel in 1958. Tracks were lowered in 1949 to accommodate larger freight cars. During World War 1, a plot to blast the tunnel was foiled. In later years, a new tunnel was constructed.

There is an extreme shortage of common sense in today’s world,
I often think back to what my parents and grandparents believed and said, at the time I thought they were totally out of their mind and ignored it. I now wish I would have listened and followed their advice more often.
It is in this light I have decided to publish some of my random thoughts based on the views of our ancestors.

 

Blue Water Bridge Port Huron Michigan

Michigan, surrounded on three sides by water and on the south by a huge cornfield, is famous for it’s bridges.

One of the most beautiful is the Blue Water Bridge spans the St. Clair River which connects Lake St. Clair and Lake Huron. The bridge carries international traffic between Port Huron, Michigan, and Point Edward and Sarnia, Ontario. Located in Port Huron, near the I-94 and I-69 interchange, the bridge forms a critical gateway linking Canada and the United States.

In 1935, the Michigan Legislature passed a law  creating a State Bridge  Commission to finance the design and erection of the  main bridge structure  of the Blue Water Bridge.  The commission was  approved by the United  States Congress in August of 1935.  The law permitted the commission to  sell bonds that would be repaid  by the revenue from the tolls collected  within  30 years.  This legislation  assumed that Michigan and Ontario would  each build their own approaches  to the bridge,  and customs, immigration  and toll facilities.

 

 

The design of the structure by the consultant firms began in August 1936.  The ground breaking ceremony was held on June 23, 1937 in the City of Port Huron and the Blue Water Bridge opened to traffic on October 10, 1938.

 

The bridge consists of two unique spans, the original Blue Water Bridge,  opened in 1938 and renovated in 1999, is a three-lane westbound bridge. The  second Blue Water Bridge, which carries three lanes of eastbound traffic, is an  impressive modern bridge opened in 1997. State-of-the-art facilities make the  Blue Water Bridge crossing one of the smoothest and most modern crossings  in the world.

 

 

 

The Second Blue Water Bridge was constructed between June 1995 and July    1997 at a cost of $41.3 million (for the Michigan half).  When this project was    completed, both eastbound and westbound traffic were placed on the new  structure while the original Blue Water Bridge was renovated at an estimated cost  of $21.3 million (for the Michigan half). Both structures were in full operation in  November 1999.  The Second Blue Water Bridge now carries three lanes of  eastbound traffic and the original Blue Water bridge carries three lanes of  westbound traffic.

 

Today the area is a tourist attraction with small parks and many other facilities allowing one to spend several hours here enjoying the bridge, water, huge barges and small craft passing by, as well as many other attractions on land.
