Farm Life

Many times we hear people say they would like to go back to the way things were in the sixties. What do they mean by that?
In many instances, things weren’t so good back then, for one we never had the modern conveniences that are available to most today, and we certain didn’t have the employment opportunities that are available today. Back then you had two different fields you could enter, work in a factory and farm. Owning a small business was limited in many cases by geographic location and lack of variety of businesses one could enter.
Going into business was in many cases limited to owning a small independent store in a small community.
There were also many social issues that had yet to be resolved, many people were perceived as second class citizens.
So besides the older generation just wanting to go back to their youth when they were probably more foot-loose and fancy-free, what makes so many want to go back to a so-called simpler time?
The main driving force is the decline of values in our society that has occurred over the last forty years.
Even though many people treated others unfairly, there was a moral sense to not go too far, there were lines that were not crossed. In most cases, people still believed in God and most went to church at least semi-regularly. If they didn’t go to church, many would go out in nature and worship God in their own way.
God was in our daily lives and even though in many ways people weren’t Godly, they still contemplated what God would want them to do.
Political correctness hadn’t been invented yet, we could still call a spade a spade and state our opinion without risk of personal harm or humiliation, in most cases.
Neighbors were neighbors, and acted like it, always willing to lend a helping hand if need be. Families still got together often and really knew each other, for better or worse. There was respect,for each other, especially respect for the elders. You may not always agree with them, but you respected what they said and thought they might accidentally know something since they had lived on this planet longer than you had.
If you disagreed, you either remained quiet or discussed it in a respectful manner without ridicule.
People were trustworthy, you didn’t need a six-page contract to buy a car or a house. Often times purchases were made on someone’s word and a handshake.
Most people were honest, some weren’t, but they were in the minority.
This is quite different than it is today.
Growing up in the “Good Old Days“
Life was a lot slower and simpler in the fifties and sixties.
That is what people refer to when they express a desire to go back to the sixties.
