Is America Still Worthy of the Respect The Rest of the World Wants to Give Us?

July 4th, 1776 is one of the most important  days in human history. The signing of the American   Declaration of Independence, one of the most precious documents since the beginning of time ushered in a new Era in the history of man.

Never before had a nation been created where mankind could worship, believe, and act as he so desired as long as he didn’t infringe upon the rights of others.

As Americans, we sometimes forget how important this is and how much people from across the globe look up to us because of what we have done to preserve freedom over the centuries.

I never thought about it much until  three separate instances almost twenty years apart solidified this in my mind.

The first incident came about several years ago while traveling in the outback of Australia. We had been in the bush for over three weeks. After that amount of time, with little contact to the outside world, we had forgotten what day it was. Time really didn’t matter, one day just became the next.

We drove into the small town of Daly Waters in the Northern Territory about two in the afternoon. As we entered the tiny village I noticed an old C-47 aircraft parked on a deserted airstrip. I hardly noticed the aircraft had U.S. markings. Our destination was the tiny pub in the center of town. Daly Waters, with a population of seventeen saw over a hundred percent increase in population when we arrived, our bus carried twenty-four weary travelers.

Entering the pub, it was apparent there was a party going on. This was interesting, I knew it wasn’t the weekend yet, we were to be in Darwin on Saturday and since we weren’t in Darwin, it couldn’t be the weekend.

Asking someone why they were partying, they said they were celebrating the 4th of July. We asked why they  were celebrating an American holiday. A loyal world two veteran promptly replied.”We just appreciate what the yanks did for us during ww2. We were attacked by the Japanese and if it wasn’t for the Americans, Australia would have fallen”. I never realized.

The second event came about while we were cruising on an Italian cruise ship in November of 2014. The ship had over 2,700 passengers on board and probably less than 20% were Americans. It was unusual  to even hear English spoken. The night before our 2014 election the theater theme was Simply Italian. All the beautiful Italian songs were sung. Near the end of the program, the vocalist began singing our national anthem.

People began to stand and sing, placing their hands over their heart.

I looked around, everyone in the audience were standing. As the anthem came to an end America was given at least a two-minute standing ovation.

The third such instance took place just a few months later. I occasionally  shuttle people to the local airports. During one such ride, I received a call asking if I would pick up someone at the Tampa airport that forgot to make a reservation. The car I was driving didn’t have any airport  stickers so it would be risky, the airport police frown upon this sort of activity.

Deciding I didn’t want this family stranded at the airport I decided to take a chance and pick them up.

I would just try and be incognito, stop at the curb, pick them up and be on my way before anyone saw me.

The plan was working  perfectly. They were in the car, luggage in the trunk and we are on the way.

Only problem. The trunk won’t stay latched. My cover is blown the curb side is jammed with people and with each closing more and more people are noticing the commotion.

A rather tall gentleman stepped forward and offered to duct tape my trunk shut. He wants to  tape the trunk of  a Lincoln Towncar shut with duct tape?

Thinking it wouldn’t work I said,  “Sure, try it”. As he began taping my passenger asked him where he was from as he had an accent. He replied Denmark.

Now wait, who flies from Denmark to Tampa with duct tape in their pocket. Is that legal? What does the TSA say about that?

The tape worked and as we started to pull away my passenger asked him what we owed him for helping. His response. Nothing, it’s the least I can do after the United States bailed us out of two world wars.

Never saw that coming!

In spite of what we are often told by the media and those who would want to destroy our country and turn it into a socialist nightmare, the United States is still that new Jerusalem, that shining city on the hill that most look to for guidance and leadership.

We currently see what happens to the world condition when America shirks its duty and let’s evil reign over the land.

We have a responsibility  to the rest of our world citizens, there isn’t any other country that can do it. It is the price we pay for living in the greatest country ever known to mankind. We sometimes overreach, but we are the world’s police force.

The rewards are great, and the consequences are disastrous if we fail in our mission.

In light of everything that has happened in our country and the ways we have abandoned people in the middle east after we had started a war and then left before it was over, we have supported and aided our own enemies and the enemies of freedom, after the last seven years of a disastrous foreign policy, do we still deserve their respect?

Wisdom lost through the ages

I believe there is some sort of “universal common sense”. In other words, events evolve according to a natural order, and certain rules apply that cannot be changed. These are God’s laws or the natural order of things. For example, if you live by a high set of moral standards, your life will naturally be better than if your life is filled with drugs, alcohol, and otherwise bad behavior. Develop a good financial plan and financial rewards will come to pass. Break these universal (God’s) laws and disaster will follow.
Living by God’s Law doesn’t guarantee a so-called perfect life, but life will be better, and easier than if the Laws of Nature are completely ignored and you wander through life with no plan.
