Sturgeon Point Harrisville Michigan

Sturgeon Point, Michigan

Built in 1869 ,Sturgeon Point Light House is a lighthouse on Port Huron in Haynes township, Alcona county near Harrisville Michigan. It’s construction is a prime example of Cape Cod type light houses that were built on the Great Lakes.

The location is roughly halfway between Alpena’s Thunder Bay Island and the northern entry to Saginaw Bay. Importantly, this point sits atop a formidable reef that is an imminent hazard to navigation.

Located in Sturgeon Point Scenic Site, a Michigan state park, the lighthouse is maintained and operated by the Alcona Historical Society,a private organization that funds the maintenance and operation with few public funds.

The light house is normally open during the summer , but it closes daily at 3 PM, so be sure to go early. There is a small fee, used to cover liability insurance.

Along with the small admission fee, a strawberry social is held at the Bailey School every June to help cover the costs of operation.

Be sure to spend a few minutes enjoying the scenery, you will be glad you did.

boy was bagging groceries at a supermarket. One day the store installed a machine for squeezing fresh orange juice. Intrigued, the young man asked if he could be allowed to work the machine, but his request was denied.

Said the store manager, “Sorry, kid, but baggers can’t be juicers.”

Blue Water Bridge Port Huron Michigan

Michigan, surrounded on three sides by water and on the south by a huge cornfield, is famous for it’s bridges.

One of the most beautiful is the Blue Water Bridge spans the St. Clair River which connects Lake St. Clair and Lake Huron. The bridge carries international traffic between Port Huron, Michigan, and Point Edward and Sarnia, Ontario. Located in Port Huron, near the I-94 and I-69 interchange, the bridge forms a critical gateway linking Canada and the United States.

In 1935, the Michigan Legislature passed a law  creating a State Bridge  Commission to finance the design and erection of the  main bridge structure  of the Blue Water Bridge.  The commission was  approved by the United  States Congress in August of 1935.  The law permitted the commission to  sell bonds that would be repaid  by the revenue from the tolls collected  within  30 years.  This legislation  assumed that Michigan and Ontario would  each build their own approaches  to the bridge,  and customs, immigration  and toll facilities.

The design of the structure by the consultant firms began in August 1936.  The ground breaking ceremony was held on June 23, 1937 in the City of Port Huron and the Blue Water Bridge opened to traffic on October 10, 1938.

The bridge consists of two unique spans, the original Blue Water Bridge,  opened in 1938 and renovated in 1999, is a three-lane westbound bridge. The  second Blue Water Bridge, which carries three lanes of eastbound traffic, is an  impressive modern bridge opened in 1997. State-of-the-art facilities make the  Blue Water Bridge crossing one of the smoothest and most modern crossings  in the world.

The Second Blue Water Bridge was constructed between June 1995 and July    1997 at a cost of $41.3 million (for the Michigan half).  When this project was    completed, both eastbound and westbound traffic were placed on the new  structure while the original Blue Water Bridge was renovated at an estimated cost  of $21.3 million (for the Michigan half). Both structures were in full operation in  November 1999.  The Second Blue Water Bridge now carries three lanes of  eastbound traffic and the original Blue Water bridge carries three lanes of  westbound traffic.

Today the area is a tourist attraction with small parks and many other facilities allowing one to spend several hours here enjoying the bridge, water, huge barges and small craft passing by, as well as many other attractions on land.

The Importance of Maintaining a Spiritual life

Photography Prints

Written by:Gary Wonning

One has to look no farther to see how  important it is to maintain a spiritual connection with our creator than the story of Jamestown, our earliest colonial settlements in the New World.

The early pioneers faced many hardships after landing in the new world in 1607. As they faced the hardships of starvation, frequent Indian attacks , inclement weather, and a variety of hardships, they began to fall away from God.

The early settlement had been reduced from five hundred to a mere sixty emaciated settlers, some of which  resorted to cannibalism to avoid death.

Upon seeing the tragic state of the colony, Gates, Summers, and Bucke went to the empty and run down church and rang it’s bell.

Those who were still able crawled out of their shelters  began praying to God.  After which they prepared to leave and sail to New Newfoundland, a safe harbor. None shed a tear, the struggle had been too hard, they buried their weapons and armor and prepared to sail away, leaving behind hundreds of graves, a failed colony and a ghost town.

As they sailed out of the harbor, a ship appeared with enough provisions and comforts to carry them through. The Right Honorable De La War arrived just in the nick of time. If he had arrived a day later , they would have all been gone.

They returned to Jamestown, fell to their knees and prayed a long silent prayer, followed by a sermon by Rev. Bucke. He then gave orders for the church to be repaired  and the colony was resuscitated, and it’s Gospel mission to the Indians was remembered.

Henceforth the tiny village prospered and from those humble beginnings our nation was born.
