Markland Dam Switzerland County

Written by :Gary Wonning

The Markland Locks and Dam is a concrete dam bridge and locks that span the Ohio River. It is 1395 feet long, and connects Gallatin County Kentucky, and Switzerland County Indiana.

The locks and dam were reviewed by the Board of Engineers for River
and Harbours to replace the Ohio River locks and dams Number 35, 36, 37,
38 and 39. Then the project was approved by the Secretary of the Army on March 11, 1953. Construction on the locks began in March 1956 and
they were placed in operation in May 1959. The dam construction began in
April 1959 and was finished in June 1964.

Located on the beautiful Ohio River which provides a natural boundary between Indiana and Ohio, Markland Dam provides not only electrical energy to many in the area, but since the addition of a bridge in the late  80s, it now provides easy access to interstate 71 and a link to not only Cincinnati Ohio, but to Louisville Kentucky as well.
.

An engineering wonder, it also controls the flow of water along this important waterway, not only to provide an adequate supply of water during the dry seasons to allow traffic up and down the river , thus enabling many needed products to reach consumers on both ends of the river.

More importantly, it controls flooding during the spring rains and snow melt, preventing hardships and disasters such as those encountered during the historic floods of 1937 when many lost not only their belongings but in many instances their lives as well.

The Custodian

The Custodian

A friend and I were standing inside a building
of a local theme park. We
were looking outside, and it was an extremely windy day. The area’s
custodian, the one who had the job of sweeping up debris, was a very
small woman (4’10”, 90 lbs.) and she was having a rough time trying
to not be blown away.

My friend joked with the lady, telling
her that she would have to put
heavy rocks in her shoes when she went outside to work.

The lady looked at my friend and lisped,
“You mean, … now I weigh me
down to sweep?”

Redirecting Fear

YOUR FAVORITE METAPHYSICAL SUPERSTORE

F.E.A.R., False Evidence Appearing Real.

Everyone at one time or another experiences fear, the kind of fear that is immobilizing and often prevents us from performing daily tasks. Many times we don’t even realize we are afraid, we just become extremely cautious while trying to deal with whatever is causing the drama.

Fear can be hard to recognize and as a result, we often avoid  the best possible solution which is to go forward, confront it , walk through it, move on and resume our life.

As hard to believe as it may seem, most fear is only a figment of our imagination. Most times, what we fear never comes to fruition. Our mind is notorious in regard to playing tricks on us and will magnify anything
we let it dwell on.

An idle mind is the devil’s playhouse, most of our fears surface when we are idle and have nothing to do. The mind is always at work and if we give it nothing to do, it will find something to think about.

It is at such times we need to refocus and put our mind to a more positive use. It is in this time we are most susceptible to creating a reality that we don’t want to come to fruition. We are constantly creating our future by the thoughts we nurture. When we allow negative thoughts to control our mind, we are creating a reality not conducive to our best interests.

Many become engulfed in this kind of thinking and continuously think thoughts that keep putting them back in the same patterns that continuously create drama and hardship in their life. The only way out of this dilemma is to change our thinking habits.

Recognizing this is a great tool for changing our life and directing us to a better place. Once one realizes what is happening, all that needs to be done is to redirect our thoughts and begin visualizing a positive outcome.

It may seem difficult at first or even silly, however, this is the first step to creating a better future.Continuous practice and a belief it
will work, over time will lead to the life you want and desire.

Enlightenment

At this period of time in the history of man, there is probably more individual searching being done into the theories behind the origin of the human race, what happens after death, the possibility of life on other planets, and what our relationship is to these life forms, if they do exist. There are millions of people who are questioning the existence of God, who he really is, and what is my relationship with him? Is he someone who mysteriously floats around on a cloud watching and judging us from above like some bigger than life Santa Claus, or is he, like many of the esoteric sciences claim, a part of our inner Self, whom we have constant contact with, someone whom we and everything in the universe are connected and are thus one? Each of us in our own way is experiencing what God is, and thus we are each a part of God, thus we are God! This book is a brief account of my search for my own truth as I know it today, everything stated actually happened, according to my own perception. It has been an exciting search, at times very frustrating, very rewarding, and above all, very fulfilling. My main purpose in writing this book is to show that anyone, even a bashful unfamous country boy can have these awakenings, you don’t have to be rich or well-known to find your connection to Divine Source.

Available in both PAPERBACK and EBOOK format.

A Potato story

A New Potato
Story

You know that all potatoes have eyes. Well,
Mr. and Mrs. Potato
had eyes for each other, and finally they got married, and had a
little sweet potato, whom they called ‘Yam.’

Of course, they wanted the best for Yam.
When it was time, they
told her about the facts of life. They warned her about going out and
getting half-baked, so she wouldn’t get accidentally mashed and get
a bad name for herself like ‘Hot Potato,’ and end up with a bunch
of Tater Tots.

Yam said not to worry, no Spud would get
her into the sack and
make a rotten potato out of her! But on the other hand she wouldn’t
stay home and become a Couch Potato, either. She would get plenty
of exercise so as not to be skinny like her Shoestring
cousins.

When she went off to Europe, Mr. and Mrs.
Potato told Yam to watch
out for the Hard Boiled guys from Ireland, and the greasy guys from
France called the French Fries. And when she went out west, to watch
out for the Indians so she wouldn’t get scalloped. Yam said she would
stay on the straight and narrow and wouldn’t associate with those high
class Yukon Golds, or the ones from the other side of the tracks who
advertise their trade on all the trucks that say, ‘Frito
Lay.’

Mr. and Mrs. Potato sent Yam to Idaho P.U.
(that’s Potato University)
so that when she graduated she’d really be in the Chips. But in spite of
all
they did for her, one day Yam came home and announced she was going
to marry Tom Brokaw. Tom Brokaw!? Yam’s parent’s exclaimed! Oh my,
Mr. and Mrs. Potato were very upset at this announcement. They told
Yam she couldn’t possibly marry Tom Brokaw because he’s just
….
